High TC Myth: Optimum Thread Count for Duvet Covers

Ranforce 100 Turkish Long-Staple Cotton

The thread count of a fabric refers to the number of threads woven into one square inch of fabric. A higher thread count means a denser and smoother fabric, as there are more threads packed into the same amount of space. 100% cotton fabric with 145TC has 145 threads woven into one square inch of fabric, while a fabric with 300TC or 800TC has 300 or 800 threads woven into the same amount of space, respectively. But what about those yarn numbers? If you are in search of 100% cotton items, then it's a high chance you came across numbers such as 20/1 or 30/1 or 40/1 and so on. Well, these numbers actually refer to the yarn thickness. That said, they can be misleading, because as the yarn number increases, the thickness of the yarn decreases and it becomes thinner. In other words, 30/1 is thicker than 40/1. Also, as the number of threads in the fabric increases, the thickness of the yarn used will decrease. For instance, most fabrics used in 100% cotton bed linen and duvet covers are 30/1 yarn, which usually translates to 145 thread count. This particular fabric is called Ranforce, and it’s been the golden standard for linens & bedding for a long time. However, throughout the years some vendors deliberately spread false information with their marketing so they could stand out from the rest. As a result, most users today believe that fabrics with thread counts below 200TC are inadequate.

Cotton Yarn 30/1

There is a widespread fallacy that the quality of bed linens rises linearly with thread count. While this may be mainly true up to a point, weaving experts claim that after 300 to 400TC, there is no additional improvement in quality. In truth, there is a maximum number of threads that may uniformly fit into a square inch of fabric. High thread counts (over 600) significantly reduce ventilation and increase the likelihood that the fabric will bobble because the fibres are too tightly packed. Therefore, it is clear that bedding above 400TC is probably just a marketing ploy where you spend more but receive less. According to the general rule, everything above 120TC is of extremely high quality, and anything above 400TC is unnecessary and only adds to the cost while degrading the experience. The thickness and the quality of the threads themselves, not just their quantity, is a crucial considerations when purchasing bedding. Shorter and thinner fibres will have more breakpoints, which will increase their propensity to pill over time.

Ranforce Fabric 145TC

Ranforce fabric, made from 100% Turkish cotton with Ne 30/1 cotton yarn and 145 threads per square inch, is a great choice for bedding sets such as sheets, pillowcases, and duvet covers. Here is why:

Long-staple cotton: The use of long-staple cotton in the fabric means that the fibres are longer and stronger, which contributes to the durability and strength of the fabric. This type of cotton is also known for its softness, making it more comfortable to sleep on.

High thread count: The 145 threads per square inch make the fabric dense and tightly woven, which helps to create a smoother and softer fabric. This high thread count also makes the fabric more durable and resistant to wear and tear, ensuring that it will last longer.

30/1 cotton yarn: The use of 30/1 cotton yarn means that the fibres are finer, which contributes to the softness and smoothness of the fabric. This type of yarn is also stronger, making it more resistant to wear and tear.

Compared to a 40/1 cotton yarn fabric, a fabric made with 30/1 cotton yarn is generally considered to be of higher quality due to its thicker fibres. The 30/1 cotton yarn creates a smooth and soft fabric that is more durable and resistant to wear and tear thanks to its thickness.

Ranforce fabric, with its 100% Turkish long-staple cotton, high thread count, and thick 30/1 cotton yarn, is a great choice. Its high-quality construction and materials make it comfortable, durable, and long-lasting, ensuring that you will enjoy a good night's sleep for many years to come.
